What is SPF?

SPF stands for sun protection factor. It is the degree to which a sunscreen protects skin from the direct rays of the sun. For example, if you normally burn in 10 minutes, wearing SPF 20 – applied properly – will protect you from burning in the sun for approximately 200 minutes.

Does layering different SPF factors result in a higher overall SPF?

No. It’s a myth that if you layer on your SPF that it becomes cumulative – putting on an SPF 20 and then adding a moisturizer with SPF 15 will not give you SPF 35 protection. Mixing chemicals from different products does not increase the SPF level.

If I have SPF 15 or higher in my foundation, am I protected?

People think that if there is a high SPF in their foundation, then they are protected from the sun. While there is SPF in foundation, protection is all about how much you apply. Unfortunately, you don’t apply enough foundation for it to act as your only protection against the sun. I highly recommend incorporating sunscreen into your beauty regimen before you apply your make-up and any SPF in your foundation is just extra insurance against sun damage.
